Information obtained in the encounter process and from other ancillary systems are permanently stored in the medDataSafe data base management system and can be accessed through medEncounter or by using the decision support tools of the medAnalyze application. medDataSafe is based on an object-oriented design and can store all major data types. Patient records contained in medDataSafe may be appended by authorized users (through medEncounter) and any changes will be kept in association with the record. This audit trail capability is a valuable tool for clinician's and administrative staff - and conforms to HIPAA requirements. medDataSafe is highly secure with multiple layers of security down to the individual data item level. medDataSafe does not require a special database administrator (DBA) as it is highly organized and needs only periodic maintenance. In the event of a catastrophic system failure, the system including medDataSafe will re-start itself, check the file systems integrity, restore data if needed and restart normal operations automatically. The system is designed to provide a centralized patient information repository in a distributed system design. Additional local or remote departments or clinics can be added in a modular fashion. Data can be also be extracted for other applications and databases (e.g. Microsoft Excel, CDC EpiInfo, etc.) via the programmable "I/O" module. The system is scalable to support millions of patients and multi-terabyte databases. In addition to incorporating information originating from other systems, medDataSafe can also integrate other existing database systems. MsdC can convert information and data relations from other existing database systems into the medDataSafe formats and indexes. As an example MsdC converted an anonymous MUMPS-based patient record database from the Veterans Administration (VA) containing over 10 years of clinical data on tens of thousands of patients in a relatively short period. MsdC was able to store and search this database in medDataSafe. This type of conversion can provide consistent information by allowing old clinical information to be used with newly entered data in a medDataSafe database. Key Benefits
